With 8 releases on our Dekmantel Records imprint, 2021 saw us delve deep into the disparate corners of our musical spectrum. We had the honour to welcome some of our closely affiliated label artists back, such as Bruxas’ mesmerising poolside psychedelia on their Muscle Memory album, as well as upsammy’s return with Bends EP — an enticing follow-up of her lauded Zoom album on our label in the year before. Proven formats also found their way back onto the label: our joint effort with Patta celebrated the many blossoming talents of our home city, while the third iteration of our Scores collaboration with RE:VIVE featured innovative soundscapes by Interstellar Funk and Günther Raler.

But perhaps more than other years, 2021 revolved around debuts of the label: Frits Wentink’s emotive audio-visual ‘Safe Passage’ project with Erik Madigan Heck blurred the boundaries between music, poetry and visuals art, while the collaborative club artillery of Philip Jondo’s Little Princess EP with DJ Plead and Maxwell Sterling sent seismic waves across forward-thinking dance floors. Cinema Royale compiled the era-defining Profondo Nero compilation for the Italo-disco and synthpop buffs, and Alberta Balsam’s Higher Dreams closed off our year with an immersive EP that embedded her electrifying sound into an interstellar narrative that transcended the space-time continuum. Melting all those sounds together into one overarching compilation, we’re proud to present ‘Dekmantel — Best Of 2021’ — an embrace of 2021 as a year of great music that found its way onto our label.
